What are impact windows and doors?

Impact windows and doors are the glass itself, engineered to survive a storm. Two panes are bonded to a tough interlayer, so when something strikes the glass it may crack but the pane holds in the frame instead of blowing into the room. The whole unit — glass, frame and anchoring — is tested and rated as a system. There is no separate shutter: the protection is built into the opening permanently.

The big advantage: nothing to close

With shutters, protection depends on someone being there to deploy them. Impact glass removes that step entirely. When a storm forms while you are travelling, at work, or off-island, the house is already protected. There are no panels to bolt on, no motors to worry about, no manual override to remember during a power cut — the openings are simply rated all the time.

Ideal for off-island and second-home owners

Much of western New Providence — Lyford Cay, Old Fort Bay, Albany — is second homes that sit empty for months. For those owners, impact windows are often the cleanest answer. The home does not depend on a caretaker reaching it before a storm, and there is no annual routine of closing and re-opening shutters. You get rated protection that works whether or not anyone is on the island, with the documentation your insurer wants on file.

  • Protection is permanent — no deployment before a storm
  • Laminated glass in tested, rated frames with proper anchoring
  • Marine-grade frames and stainless hardware for coastal salt air
  • Documentation provided for your Bahamian insurer

Quieter, cooler and more secure every day

Impact glass pays back beyond storm season. The laminated construction cuts outside noise noticeably — welcome near Cable Beach, the airport flight path or a busy road. It blocks the majority of UV, protecting floors and furnishings from the strong island sun, and it helps with cooling load. And because the glass resists impact, it is far harder to break through, adding real security to a home that stands empty.

Impact windows vs shutters: which is right?

Both reach a rated standard; the difference is how you live with them.

  • Choose impact glass if you want zero deployment, are frequently off-island, or value the daily noise, UV and security benefits — and you are open to replacing the window units.
  • Choose shutters if you want to protect existing windows at lower cost per opening, want adjustable daytime shade, or are protecting large sliders best covered by roll-downs or accordions and panels.

Many homes end up with a blend — impact glass on the main house and shutters on the garage and outbuildings, or Bahama shutters for character on the front. We install rated products either way and provide the insurance documentation. Book January to May, before season supply tightens.
