What are Bahama shutters?

"Bahama shutter" describes a style, not a rating. It is the top-hinged, louvered shutter you see across the islands — mounted above the window and propped out at an angle so it throws shade while you still see through the louvers. Colonial shutters are the side-hinged cousin, swinging in from both sides to meet in the middle. Both are part of the Bahamian architectural vocabulary, and both can be beautiful on a New Providence home.

The catch: most "Bahama shutters" online are decorative only

Here is the honest part a lot of sellers skip. A large share of the Bahama and colonial shutters sold online are decorative — thin, ornamental panels meant to dress up a facade. They are not engineered or rated to protect glass in a hurricane. Bolt a decorative louvered shutter over your window and you have a nice-looking home and no storm protection at all. In a rated home, that opening still counts as unprotected to your insurer.

Rated Bahama shutters are a different product

The version we install is built to a tested standard: heavier extruded aluminum frames and louvers, proper hinges and closing hardware, and an engineered attachment to the wall. Closed and secured, a rated Bahama shutter is genuine opening protection that earns the same insurance recognition as other rated systems — with the documentation to prove it. Open, it gives you the louvered shade and the look. You get the style and the storm rating, rather than choosing between them.

  • Top-hinged Bahama or side-hinged colonial configurations
  • Extruded marine-grade aluminum, powder-coated, stainless hardware
  • Miami-Dade rated options with documentation for your insurer
  • Adjustable shade and privacy while keeping the sightline out

Style, shade and protection in one shutter

For owners who care how the house looks — and in Lyford Cay, Old Fort Bay and along the older streets of Nassau, many do — rated Bahama shutters are the rare product that satisfies the eye and the insurer at once. They shade the glass through the long summer, cut cooling load, add privacy, and drop into storm position when a system approaches. They suit the front elevation where a roll-down housing might not fit the character of the home.

Where they fit in a whole-home plan

Bahama and colonial shutters usually work best on the feature windows where appearance matters most, paired with quieter protection elsewhere — roll-downs on wide sliders, accordions or panels on the back of the house, or impact windows where you want nothing to close at all. We help you plan the mix, install rated products throughout, and hand over the insurance documentation. Book January to May, before season supply tightens.
